Oct. 3             
The Artist-Lecture Series will present motivational speaker Bill Strickland at 7 p.m. in Akin Auditorium. After growing up in Pittsburgh’s inner city, Strickland founded a jobs training center and community arts program to give disadvantaged kids and adults opportunities for a better future. He is the author of Make the Impossible Possible: One Man’s Crusade to Inspire Others to Dream Bigger and Achieve the Extraordinary. He also founded the Grammy-winning MCG Jazz, an organization to preserve, present and promote jazz. It presents concerts, workshops, and recordings to strengthen the jazz community. Admission is $20 to general public; $18 for senior citizens, active-duty military, and MSU alumni; free to MSU students, faculty, and staff with ID. Oct. 4             
The Speakers & Issues Series presents artist and forensic sculptor Amanda Danning at 7 p.m. at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas. Danning has achieved recognition, in part, through her consulting work with the Smithsonian Institute. Her facial reconstructions have been the subjects of exhibits at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., the National Buffalo Soldier Museum, and the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Her work has also been displayed on programs shown on the History Channel and the National Geographic Channel. With over 20 years of professional experience and an advanced degree in sculpture, Danning has more than a hundred portraits in museums across the nation. The Department of Theatre will present Dracula by Steven Dietz at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in the Fain Fine Arts Center Theatre. The play is based on Bram Stoker’s novel of the Transylvanian vampire and those who want to stop him from taking new victims. General admission tickets are $10. Price is $8 for pre-college students, senior citizens, and military. MSU students, faculty, and staff will be admitted free. The Office of Student Transition Services will host Family Weekend 2018, a time for families to join their MSU student for a time of fun and college memories. Events include the Caribfest cultural festival, an outdoor movie, fun and games at the Quad, and family tailgating before the Mustangs-Texas A&M Commerce football game Saturday night. The Music Series at Akin presents the Miro Quartet at 7:30 p.m. in Akin Auditorium. The quartet – Daniel Ching, violin; William Fedkenheuer, violin; John Largess, viola; and Joshua Gindele, cello – have served as the quartet-in-residence at The University of Texas Butler School of Music since 2003. Each of the musicians teaches classes at UT and conducts master classes at universities and conservatories around the world. Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. as MSU carillonneur Jim Quashnock will play Christmas music on the Redwine Carillon housed in MSU’s Hardin Administration Building tower.

The Ben Franklin Elementary School Choir will perform at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Hardin Administration Building.

The MSU-Burns Fantasy of Lights will host a fun run at 9 a.m. beginning and ending on the east lawn of the Hardin Administration Building (Taft Street side). Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Fee is $25 for the 5K run or $15 for the 1-mile fun run. Free for MSU students. The first 100 paid registrants will receive a commemorative ornament. Prizes ($25 gift cards) will be awarded to best and worst holiday-themed male and female participants and to the fastest 5K male and female runners.
