Jan. 21            University closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Jan. 23            The Artist-Lecture Series presents Megan Phelps-Roper at 7 p.m. in Akin Auditorium. Phelps-Roper is the granddaughter of Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist Church, known for its protests at funeral services for soldiers and for its verbal attacks on the LGBT community. Phelps-Roper helped spread the church’s doctrine of hate through social media, engaging in arguments with those who questioned her. After interaction with others who showed empathy toward those who were hurting, she began to question her church’s celebration of human tragedy, left the church and renounced its teachings. Admission is $20 to the general public; $18 for senior citizens, active-duty military, and MSU alumni; free to MSU students, faculty, and staff with ID. Feb. 1-2          The Department of Theatre will present The Mountaintop by Katori Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday in Bea Wood Studio Theatre. The Mountaintop is a fictional story of Martin Luther King Jr.’s last night on earth, set in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel on the eve of his 1968 assassination. Feb. 14            The 37th annual Streich Family Lecture Series will present Dr. Gustavo Ferreira at 11 a.m. in Dillard 101. His topic will be “U.S. Agricultural Trade in the 21st Century: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities.” Ferreira is an economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program. He analyzes fraud in the international trade of organic agricultural products. The Streich Family Lecture Series is sponsored by the Dillard College of Business Administration, the Mamie Raborn Center for Economic Education, and Delta Sigma Pi. Admission is free. Feb. 26            The Music Series at Akin presents pianist Alessio Bax at 7:30 p.m. in Akin Auditorium. Bax has appeared as a soloist with more than 100 orchestras, including the London and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, and the Dallas and Houston symphonies. This marks Bax’s third performance for the Music Series at Akin. He played Akin in October 2013 and in October 2015. Bax and his wife, pianist Lucille Chung, who also has been a guest for the Music Series at Akin, are co-artistic directors of the Joaquín Achúcarro Foundation, created to support young pianists’ careers. He is also the Johnson-Prothro Artist-in-Residence at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts. March 4          The Faculty Forum will present Drs. Kirsten Lodge and John Schulze at 7 p.m. in the Legacy Hall Multipurpose Room. Lodge, Assistant Professor of Humanities, and Schulze, Assistant Professor of English, will present “Core Text Pedagogy: Its Significance and Methodology” using Euripides’ classic play, Medea. March 7-10    The Department of Theatre will present Neil Simon’s Rumors at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Fain Fine Arts Center Theatre. Rumors is Simon’s classic farce about an anniversary dinner party gone wrong. General admission tickets are $10. Price is $8 for pre-college students, senior citizens, and military. March 8             The Gunn College of Health Sciences and Human Services will host the 18th Annual Community Health Fair from 8 a.m.-noon in the Don Flatt Gym in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. “Put Prevention into Practice” is the theme for the event. Nursing students, respiratory therapy students, and dental hygiene students each participate. Blood pressure readings, tests for cholesterol/lipids, glucose, pulmonary function, hearing, vision, HIV/AIDS, STDs, depression, skin cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease are among the screenings available. Educational activities related to nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, violence/abuse prevention, drug/alcohol abuse prevention, stress reduction, dental health, and more will be available. The Juanita Harvey Art Gallery at MSU will host an opening reception for the Judy Sherrod and S. Gayle Stevens’ exhibit, “Nocturnes,” and for visiting ceramics artist Austyn Taylor and Continuing Education ceramics students from 6-8 p.m. The “Nocturnes” exhibit of wet-plate collodion photographic work will be in conjunction with the photographic collective event March 11-15 at the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas. Taylor earned her MFA in ceramics from Alfred University and exhibits internationally. Exhibits will be on display through April 9. Call 940-397-4264 for more information.

March 11-15  The Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU Texas will host “Shootapalooza: A Murmuration of Artists,” an artist collective of over 70 photographers who exhibit, tour and teach. The exhibition will be in conjunction with the “Nocturnes” exhibit at the Juanita Harvey Art Gallery. “Shootapalooza” was formed in 2014 by the late Judy Sherrod. It is a diverse group of mostly women photographers from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia who collaborate, inspire, and teach each other. Sherrod died in 2017, but the group continues on in her spirit. Dates tentative. Call the museum at 940-397-8900 for more information.

April 1            The Faculty Forum will present Associate Professor of Spanish Claudia Montoya at 7 p.m. in Dillard 101. Montoya’s topic will be “The Cuban-Chinese Experience: a Story of Migration, Sacrifice, and Adaptability. Montoya is part of a group who visited Cuba to study this unique ethnic group. In the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s, Chinese migrated to Cuba and their culture flourished with restaurants and other businesses. Under Fidel Castro’s communism in the late 1950s, their goods were taken by the state and businesses closed, and new cultural influences were cut off, making the Chinese culture in Cuba a shadow of what it once was.
